How Old Is Navision?

Navision has been in existence since 1983. This particular piece of software has had multiple names over the years. Known originally as Navision, it later became Navision Attain.

The question is however, what is it? Navision is, put simply, a Microsoft owned software that was designed specifically for SME’s. This particular software is used to help SME’s in certain areas such as relationship management, finance and even manufacturing.

While it wasn’t always Microsoft owned, it’s come a long way since its 1983 debut, having proven what an invaluable piece of software it is within the running of companies.

The Journey Of Navision ERP

Navision first began back in Denmark and was actually first developed by a company known as PC&C A/S. The initial purpose of the software was to design a system that would act as a user friendly IT solution that would cater for basic accounting needs to one single user.

Fast forward a little down the line and Navision was developed further to cater to several different users at once. Over the course of the next 20 years, Navision would grow even more functions allowing it to eventually become a certified ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solution.

After several years of working with the software, PC&S A/S, now known as Navision Software A/S finally sold to Microsoft, not only the software but the system itself. In 2002, Navision officially became part of the Microsoft family and Microsoft Navision was born.

This put Microsoft in an incredibly powerful position, allowing Microsoft to finally offer SME’s an ERP system.

Along Came Microsoft Dynamics NAV

Fast forward to 2005 and Microsoft Navision ERP became Microsoft Dynamics NAV. There were a number of different versions available, all of which were named after the year they were released.

Each subsequent version incorporated more functionalities and technologies, all under the umbrellas of supply chain management, business intelligence and finance. Further improvements were delivered once again in 2013 which allowed for much better performance, further technology components and all with incredibly strong functionality.

Further improvements continued to be delivered through to 2017 with the arrival of Tablet Client, Office 365 integration and document reporting using Microsoft’s Word. In 2018 however, a rebrand became inevitable and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central was announced to the world.

Nav became part of the 365 world, including several new and exciting features as well as a brand new interface with better GDPR compliance and enhanced integration with Excel. What was once solely Nav software had become part of an entire solution for SME’s.
